There are many sources of self study available off the internet and I have listed a few throughout the many pages that are a part of this WEB site. Sometimes it's really nice to sit down with a book. No batteries or electrical outlets required. You may have some favorites that appeal to you. Send along your idea of a good book on the topic - Amateur Radio (including sub topics of antennas, and digital modes of communication) and I will include them here to help others who may be looking for help.
I haven't looked, yet, but expect that ham radio e-books for the many electronic readers are becomming available now so watch for them. The fact that they don't have to be printed and shipped should bring the price down.
Ham Radio In General
"RAC Study Guide for the Basic Exam" and the "The RAC Operating Manual" (Radio Amateurs Canada - available through Durham Radio, Radio World, and the RAC web site)."Their study guide, The Canadian Amateur Radio Basic Qualification Study Guide is used by almost all club licensing courses. This study guide has been carefully matched to the examination requirements as defined by Industry Canada to ensure that everything is covered."
The Instructor's Guide (on CD) is also a very useful addditon to any any instuctor's "bag of tricks". Very useful content there that could be used directly or cut and pasted into teaching materials.
See Radio Amateurs Canada Store: http://www.rac.ca/store/
The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications (American Radio Relay League) - excellent resource. Those studying to gain an in depth knowledge of radio for certification or for just improving their knowledge can't go wrong by purchasing the ARRL Handbook. Available through Radioworld, Durham Radio, HRO Radio, Amazon, Chapters or the ARRL store.
RSGB Radio Communication Handbook (Radio Society of Great Britain) - excellent resource, many similarities to the ARRL Handbook. RSGB have a number of excellent books on a variety of topics of interest to radio amateurs.
Coax Publications - Coax publications publishes much of what is found in the book section of the RAC store. This link will give you the opportunity to find other Canadian stores that sell RAC publications.
