The Mercury Amateur Radio Association
of British Columbia
(M.A.R.A. - BC)
This is a new development for us LDS members in BC and so is in a growth stage. If you look up Mercury NW on Google you will find an associated organization in the NW US (mostly Washington, Oregon, Idaho), and can see how we hope that MARA BC will develop.
The purpose of MARA is basically two fold -
- provide emergency radio communications to support the welfare efforts of the leaders of our church in a disaster and the ensuing cleanup. In addition to that to assist our neighbours and our local goverment agencies in the same way to help each other survive and thrive.
- provide Basic amateur radio training courses and certification to LDS members, their
relatives, friends, and those who want to participate in the realm of emergency preparedness communications. To hold regular radio nets as ongoing practice in message handling and net control.
MARA is not an agency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints though it is mostly made up of church members. The church certainly gives encouragement to members to join organizations like this and also their local municipal emergency programs. In some regions stakes and wards may even have their own amateur radio antennas and equipment to help with ongoing training and nets. It all comes down to service to our fellow man and being our brother's keeper whether LDS or not.
Always looking for useful input to improve content of this and other pages on this WEB site so if you have some good ideas please pass them on. No guarantee they will be put to use but then they just may.
All the best
